Final reflection

Kia ora,

This semester we’ve been making cultural food in my food technology class. For our end of semester we hosted a festival for any of our school’s students or whanau to come and try our food. Kiara and I created a group together to make fry bread from our Maori culture. We made a plan for Kiara to bring her family’s fry bread recipe dough already pre-made from home to make sure we had enough time to finish.
When we began frying them we had a taste and they were amazing, nice and soft on the inside while the outside was nice and crispy. We even ended up making a giant one, the size of my hand.

I think that the only thing that I would change is instead of pouring the cinnamon sugar on, I would roll them into the sugar on a plate to evenly coat them.

other than that it was a very fun semester, making food with friends.

Join us for a bite!

Kia ora,

I’d love to invite you to a special cultural food event happening at my school on Thursday, 5th of December.

For this event, I’ve chosen to cook Māori cuisine, while other students will be preparing dishes from many different cultures. We’ll be spending the first two periods cooking, and then…

Come along, taste the food we’ve made, and enjoy all the different cultural dishes on display.

I’d really love for you to come and support me—and try some of the delicious kai we’ve prepared!

Ngā mihi,
Skye

Burger overview

This term we have been making burgers and experimenting with different tastes, ingredients, meats, and bread buns.

Although it is week 6 I have only been able to attend one Practical lesson this term so my knowledge is much less than the others but with the burger I made was using a chicken patty, and a ciabatta bun. The coating for the chicken was crispy though when biting into the Burger it was quite difficult with the size, I personally think that Burgers should be just the right size to bite into properly without falling apart.

Next time I would like to change how many vegetables I sauteed, The team I was in didn’t like to saute their food so I kept quiet but I would like to lightly fry the onions and make a sauce with the Cucumber/Gurkin.

That is what I would change, What would you put in your Burger?

Term review (Summary)

In the beginning of this term we began with making many snacks that included different kinds of nuts, Personally I don’t enjoy eating nuts that much but it was still fun to have that option.

Around week 7 we had a day where we had to make two dishes in one day, at the start of the assessment we made a Bean and cheese Quesadilla which I ended up giving to my older sister due to being full from the second dish we made that was a Cafe style wrap. This was honestly my favorite dish out of everything all term, with the heated wrap with the mayo and luncheon/ham reminded me of the buns we used to have for lunch at camps and Koru games. Overall I think this term was quite good,

What’s your favorite kind of wrap?

Snacks

When I was younger, my mum had always made plain scones whenever we had too much flour and jam.

It eventually became one of my favourite snacks whenever it was a sunny day or just a good day over all, the scones mum made were always paired with butter and jam. The mix of sweetness from the jam and the salty-ness from the butter.

What’s your favourite spread?

Fry bread Pizza!

For food tech last week, We made pizza while using fry bread.
During this process, we had to start off with preparing our vegetables, each group in the class had to use all the components given to them although they had a choice for a few optional ingredients.

For my pizza I started by cutting the onion into thin but not too thin strips, this made it much easier to cook them only slightly before putting it on the pizza which I did along with the rest of the people on my table/in my group. To saute your vegetables is optional but it does give your pizza or dish a different taste and caramelises your ingredients.

Before we went to saute we had to chop up the rest of the vegetables and meat that was provided at the beginning, Our fry bread dough was simple, much like the scone dough we made in a previous class, it was plainly dry and wet components in small portions. After mixing up the dough and chopping the vegetables we threw it all together and topped it off with our cheddar, we put our cheese on top to create a layer as a cushion for the other ingredients to basically bathe under.

The pizza was in the oven for about 10 minutes before we took it out and had a taste, The cheese was stringy and added the right amount of softness while the meat and onions added a nice savoury taste in change of the sauce, which we ad decided to mix with Mayonnaise to sweeten it up.

Overall it was a very well tasting Pizza,
